Did You Know “Old Yeller” Was a Yellow Black Mouth Curr?
Originating in the United States in the 1800s, this scent hound has been working on farms and ranches in the South for 200 years. The yellow black mouth curr was the dog that was accurately depicted in the 1957 movie “Old Yeller.” Their name refers to their yellow coats of short fur that can be either coarse or fine, and their black mouths which extend from their muzzle and lips into the interior of their mouths. Any other color of mouth would be considered a fault in this breed.
This intelligent dog is also a quick learner. Originally bred to hunt and tree its game, as well as herd cattle and hogs, these dogs are still being used for these purposes. They are extremely loyal and protective of their family and property. Although their nature is to be very physical, they can sense frailty and act accordingly. The fearless yellow black mouth curr is willing to die in the protection of the family, having been known to kill snakes that were about to bite or “herding” a child to keep them from coming too close to a busy road. Be aware, though, that every dog is an individual and some dogs make better family pets than other dogs. Due to their hunting instincts, this breed can never be trusted with family pets other than dogs. Outside of a secure area, they should be kept on a leash.
This breed requires a large yard so that they have lots of room to run. Their excellent jumping and climbing abilities requires that the yard have at least a 6-foot or higher fence. The yellow black mouth curr requires so much daily stimulation, both mental and physical, that they are not suitable for apartment living. They are easily bored, and even a long daily run would not be enough to satisfy their needs. If they are deprived of the proper stimulation, they could become high strung and rammy.
This breed requires little grooming. You should bathe your yellow black mouth curr only when necessary, as too frequent bathing can lead to dry skin, which can then lead to other skin problems. An occasional comb and brush is all the coat requires. By way of a reminder, whenever you’re clipping their toenails, be sure to also trim their excess ear hair at the same time.
