The Black Mouth Cur Dog: Born and Raised in the U.S.A.
Dogs descended from wolves thousands of years ago. So, comparatively, the black mouth cur dog is a relatively new breed, having been developed in the southern United States in the 1800s. They are still being used today for their original purpose of hunting and treeing squirrel, raccoon, boar, bear, mountain lion and bobcat. They can catch and kill medium-sized game because they never retreat. Additionally, this breed herds cattle, bays hogs and tracks deer. These dogs are also successful at search and rescue operations. This breed is so active and so quick to comprehend, that some six-month-old puppies have been known to train themselves in treeing and herding.
This rugged and sturdy hunting dog comes in a variety of coat colors and shades, but it would be a fault if the dog did not have a black muzzle and mouth. Various states in the south are known to have a predominance of one coat color, and particular lines are generally used for a specific activity. However, a talented dog may be used for multiple purposes. These dogs range in weight from 30 to 95 pounds; this wide variance is not only attributable to the sex, but also to the different breeding lines. Although this breed is not recognized by the American Kennel Club, it is recognized by the National Kennel Club and the United Kennel Club.
You will want to begin training your dogs as soon as you bring them home. The owner must establish himself as the leader of the pack; therefore, whenever walking, your dog must heel. Since the black mouth cur dog is very intelligent, you want to have numerous training sessions; but make them short sessions so that the dog doesn’t become bored. These dogs have a predictably even temperament and, if they are properly socialized, will hunt well with other dogs. These dogs are quick learners and have a great desire to please their masters. Your confident and consistent training will yield positive results. This breed requires both mental and physical exercise daily; if these are not met, the dog could develop unwanted behaviors.
A hardy breed, they are susceptible to few genetic abnormalities; however, the eyelid condition of entropion is a possibility. And, since the black mouth cur dog is so active, they may experience pulled muscles and/or torn ligaments. You can expect your dog to live from 12 to 16 years.
